From illuminated medieval manuscripts to the names of fallen warriors etched in the black granite of Maya Lin’s Vietnam Memorial (1982), typography, words and phrases make regular appearance in the visual arts. A striking early Renaissance example is on view in the Museum of San Marco in Florence, where, together, the four painted panels of Fra Giovanni Angelico’s (c. 1395–1455) Doors of the Silver Cabinet (c. 1450) contain thirty-six rectangles, thirty-four of which depict various episodes in the life of Jesus (see fig. 6.1).3 Each scene is bordered by two painted scrolls. The scrolls appearing above Angelico’s images contain quotations from the Old Testament, while those painted beneath contain words from the New. In total, the work boasts sixty-eight biblical quotations.
